Brahman Hills New Spa

We were in need of some serious rest and relaxation, and a quick escape from the bustle of the city! So when we stumbled upon Brahman Hills we were sold. Not to mention our decision was made a whole lot easier when we saw the owners had just renovated the spa. Situated in the midst of the Blue Crane Nature Reserve on the Brahman Hills property, The Spa is where you need to be – surrounded by sweeping views of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands that seem to stretch on forever across the hills. Stepping leisurely across the suspended walkway to the stunning glass front door, you’ll hear the tinkling sound of water gently trickling over the corrugated iron water feature below … and it seemed to be having the desired effect as we immediately began to relax. As you step inside you’ll discover a world of simplicity and style – soothing neutral tones with wood accents invite you in, while walls of cerulean blue downstairs make for a calming, zen-like environment and giant circular windows allow sunlight to pour in. The Spa uses all-natural, hand-crafted products, making this a truly sensory experience as the rich scents of exquisite essential oils, salts and scrubs envelop you throughout your treatment. Think rose geranium and the refreshing fragrance of lemon grass, and more! Before you choose, the health benefits of each product are carefully explained and you’re invited to make your own choice of mineral salts before heading downstairs for your treatment. Once your skin has attained its glowing state you have the option to recline in the Tranquillity Lounge with champagne, chocolate or coffee to savour … frankly we’d just like to move in permanently!
Besides indulgent spa treatments, there’s also a full bridal and make-up service available, which makes total sense as this hotel has a wonderful chapel and a glass reception venue, making it an extremely popular choice for romantic countryside weddings.
This beautiful, tranquil hotel offers a choice of either hotel rooms or self-catering cottages, which really are the better choice – especially perfect for parents with boys at school in the Midlands, who are dying for a home cooked meal (it’s a hop, skip and jump away from Michaelhouse). The two-bedroom cottages have everything you could possibly need for a weekend – or longer – stay. And we seriously mean everything – right down to a pizza cutter and a pastry brush for those brave enough to use them. There are faux fur blankets which make curling up and watching your favourite series on the massive flat screen TVs irresistible, huge comfy beds with heated blankets, and oversize baths with Charlotte Rhys spoils – honestly why would you ever want to leave? What we loved is that there are all sorts of options when you’re staying here … you can choose to have breakfast at the hotel and then the rest self-catered, you can have all three meals up at the main hotel or you can even – better still – sit on your verandah and let a private chef prepare something delish in your cottage’s kitchen. You can guess which one we went for!
Even though staying cosy in your cottage seems like the obvious choice, venturing out turned out to be just as fantastic! We enjoyed an absolutely sensational dinner at 89 on Copper – think roasted tomato and basil soup, fillet with best-ever potato croquettes and roasted veggies, lamb chops with crunchy chips and mint, apple crumble with almond ice cream … nothing wrong with this menu. Under the new management of Gill Bowmaker (of Granny Mouse fame), this KwaZulu-Natal Midlands spot is quickly gaining a reputation with locals as one of the best dining choices in the area.
Alongside the eatery is the lovely Copper bar, and a few cosy nook-and-cranny sitting rooms, where you can curl up with a good book or even better, share a bottle of wine and a catch-up with friends.
The hotel – which has been completely and extensively renovated since its days at the old Windmills Hotel – is set in an area that just begs to be explored, either on a gentle walk, a more adventurous hike or on a bike … it you’re a mountain biker, definitely take it along. Whether you’re looking for romance (an extravagant wedding, or a night in the country for two), a family gathering or simply a short get-out-of-the-city break, we’re mad about this new find. It’s absolutely stunning!
