There’s a hot new Spaniard in town

We were a little heartbroken when Wombles decided to leave Parktown North (though we love its new spot in Bryanston!) but the blow has definitely been softened by the arrival of the brand-new restaurant that’s taken its spot – La Boqueria. Inspired by the world’s iconic food markets, this all-day eatery and brainchild of the team behind The Foundry, is the epitome of chic eating. The food is mostly Spanish, but there’s a distinct nod to decadent dishes from around the globe, and its warm, vibey atmosphere is clearly reminiscent of its namesake, the famous La Boqueria market on Las Rambla in Barcelona. Warm colours, huge plants, and an array of retro mid-20th century pieces of wooden furniture all give the space a distinctly cool feel, all brought together by the six metre high mural of a Spanish torero that greets you as you enter. Not to be outdone by its surroundings (and they really are lush!) is the unforgettable food and drink menu. As in Spain, equal importance is placed on the food and beverage aspects of the menu, with an extensive and varied wine list that features local as well as international vintages. But where La Boqueria really shines is in the food. It’s lovingly made with fresh local ingredients and with an emphasis on spice and flavour, so there’s something for everyone to fall in love with. We recommend you go hungry, and don’t miss out on the matrimonio toast, paella marisco, or delicious gintonic tart – trust us, you won’t be sorry!
